The UK’s Department for Environment has found that indoor air pollution can be up to five times higher than outdoor levels due to these cleaning products. And according to the Royal College of Physicians, around 15% of adult asthma cases are linked to exposure to these products. 

 

Here are some more examples of common chemicals found in non-sustainable cleaning products include some of the following:  

  • Ammonia: Commonly found in glass and surface cleaners, ammonia can cause respiratory irritation and is harmful to the environment. 
  • Chlorine: Used in disinfectants and bleach, chlorine can produce toxic fumes and is harmful to aquatic life when it enters waterways.  
  • Phthalates: These are often used in fragranced products and can disrupt hormones, affecting reproductive health. 
  • Formaldehyde: Found in some cleaning products, formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and can cause respiratory issues 

 

As well as cleaning chemicals having an adverse effect on the environment, the use of water alone can also have an adverse environmental impact. For example, heating water for cleaning purposes consumes significant amounts of energy which then contributes to carbon emissions. Even without heating water, treating, and transporting water requires significant amounts of energy. The process involves several energy- intensive steps, such as pumping water from sources and treating it to make it safe for consumption and distributing it through the water supply network.

Using excessive amounts of water increases the demand for these processes, which in turn contributes to higher cardon emissions and climate change. Therefore, if all businesses reduced the amount of water used in cleaning operations we can make significant movements towards a more sustainable future.

Regular/ Daily Cleaning

Public transport vehicles, such as trains and buses, receive regular cleaning, including wiping down armrests and vacuuming seats. 

Using an industrial-style vacuum, like the Victor Cordless Back Vacuum, is recommended for cleaning between seats and down aisles. While vacuuming is great for removing loose dirt and debris, achieving a deeper clean requires the use of moisture. This can be challenging due to the obstructions posed by seats, tables, and the typically narrow aisles of trains and buses. Although a mop can be useful in such environments, a scrubber dryer offers a quicker and more effective cleaning solution.

At Victor we learnt that many manufacturers create large machines for large spaces but reaching those smaller confined areas is as important to achieve a completely clean environment. The Victor Hyperglideis our favourite solution for this, the same look and size as an upright vacuum, but in the form of a scrubber dryer.

For those hard-to-reach areas, the Victor Mini Scrubber can be used to clean underneath and around seating, in any tight space. Completely versatile, the Mini Scrubber features adjustable handles, handheld functionality, and interchangeable cleaning heads. There’s also an extendable long reach handle, this is great if you’re not able to get close to the area you’re cleaning. Or so users won’t have to bend down to clean low level areas.

Periodic Deep-Clean

When it comes to period cleaning of seating, we recommend using a steam cleaner, this will penetrate the fabric, effectively removing germs, stains, and bacteria. Another benefit of using a steam cleaner is that it does not involve any harsh chemicals which contributes to sustainability efforts.
Victor provides two variants of commercial steam cleaners, the SL8000 and the Steam Extractor.
The SL8000 combine HEPA vacuumation with steam to remove dirt and water, leaving surfaces clean, dry, and sanitised. Keeping your seats dry is important, especially if they can’t air dry naturally. Any leftover moisture could lead to mould, leaving the seats in a worse condition than prior to cleaning. The use of the HEPA filter helps to remove any dust, pollen, mould and bacteria particles from the air, which reduces the risk of viral infection.
For a slightly more powerful steamer, Victor supplies the Steam Extractor. Although this does not include vacuumation, it does have a slightly higher temperature of steam.

Transport Hubs | Train Stations & Bus Stations

Transport infrastructure in the UK often lacks essential maintenance and repairs. Public funding is limited, and like other sectors such as healthcare and highway maintenance, there isn’t always enough money to cover all needs. This can lead to various issues and deteriorating conditions. Even with £36 billion reallocated from HS2 into various transport projects, funding remains insufficient.

Aging infrastructure, poor drainage systems, and severe weather at train and bus stations can sometimes result in leaks. And limited funding can delay those essential repairs. And it’s getting to that time of year where we’ll unfortunately but definitely see rain.

For a short-term solution, Victor has produced the innovative SlipStop®. The SlipStop® range features a wide funnel leak collector that efficiently gathers water from leaks while also serving as a high-visibility wet floor sign, minimising slip hazards.

Given the pressures of ensuring health and safety, the SlipStop® is an excellent temporary fix. Using a bucket to catch leaks can be a tripping hazard, especially in high-traffic areas during peak times. A bucket might not be visible and could result in a passenger or employee sustaining an injury.

Flooring in High-Traffic Areas

Train stations and airports experience exceptionally high levels of foot traffic, especially during peak times when passengers are commuting to and from work or school. This means floors are exposed to a variety of contaminants, including food, drink spills, oil, and litter. Cleaners must ensure these high-traffic areas receive extra attention and remain free of significant obstructions. Maintaining slip resistance is also crucial to ensure passenger safety.
Littering, particularly with chewing gum, is an ongoing issue, costing the UK government £7 million per year to clean streets and public spaces. Besides being unsightly, chewing gum is also a nuisance to clean. We recommend using a steam cleaner combined with a flat-edged scraping attachment. The Victor SL8000 is an excellent solution, as it comes with a full range of attachments for scraping the floor. Additionally, the SL8000 includes HEPA vacuumation, ensuring the flooring is left completely dry. The steam from the machine helps to soften the gum, breaking down the adhesive properties, making it easier to lift from the floor surface.

 

For general cleaning, an industrial scrubber dryer is recommended for floor maintenance. Manual methods, such as mopping, are often ineffective, leaving water behind, restricting the user, and wasting time and energy. In high-traffic areas, it’s almost unavoidable to have people walking across the floor during cleaning and leaving the floor wet is a hazard to passengers but also can make the floor dirtier, because people will then tread the dirt from their shoes onto the wet floor.

Victor supplies a range of high-performance scrubber dryers that are uniquely compact. These machines are designed to cover as much floor space as larger models but in a smaller form factor, making them excellent for use in large spaces without creating obstructions, as well as in small spaces like corridors.

When choosing a scrubber dryer, it’s important to ensure it has sufficient vacuumation to collect the water left behind. The Victor range offers a unique benefit with the placement of the squeegee at the back of the machine, this helps remove water from the floor more effectively—a feature not commonly found in the market.

Another advantage is user functionality. Like much of the Victor range, these machines are designed to be used by anyone with basic training. In the cleaning industry, it’s common for companies to employ agency or inexperienced staff. The industry also employs a higher percentage of non-British workers (21%) compared to the average across all employment sectors (18%). This means English may not be the first language for some users. Therefore, it’s important that machines can be easily understood on their first use which also saves time & money.

Green Cleaning Practices

Sustainability has become a key objective for many organisations, including those in the transport sector. Increasingly, there is pressure to adopt sustainable practices due to the significant impact of customer demand. This can be a decisive factor in whether people choose one company’s products and services over another’s.
Sustainability in cleaning can be introduced with a variety of practices. Northern Rail has been working to reduce their single-use plastics by installing cleaning solution fill stations across their network, cutting down the number of bottles used by 9,000 annually. In 2023. In terms of their cleaning solution, they also introduced ‘Clean Zero’—a chemical-free cleaner created by re-engineering water through a seven-stage filtration process. This solution is now used across their fleet of 345 trains.
Stopping or reducing the use of chemicals in cleaning is becoming a popular method for implementing sustainable practices. And one of the reasons why Victor introduced the Oscillating machines to the product range. Ocelot & Ocelot Plus Comparison | Comparing the differences between Oscillating machines. 

 

Understanding the Challenge 

In the scrubber dryer market, we recognised a significant gap: there wasn’t a machine that could effectively and cost-efficiently provide a deep clean, specifically concerning textured flooring, where there’s indentations. For example, a common flooring type ‘safety flooring’ often has a textured surface for the purpose of slip- resistance.

However, this can be problematic if the flooring eventually builds dirt between these indentations, creating a smoother surface, which is then difficult to clean & compromises the non-slip properties. This now poses a safety concern, which can be detrimental to healthcare facilities, commercial kitchens, industrial factories and so much more.

At Victor, we came up with innovative Oscillating machines, designed to tackle this challenge, head on. Introducing the Oscillating floor cleaning machines, designed to penetrate those indented areas & remove dirt, flawlessly.

 

We came up with two variations of the Oscillating machine, the Ocelot 400 & the Ocelot 400 plus. These machines are nearly identical, apart from a few significant differences.

Firstly, let’s look at how these machines are the same. 

 

Oscillation: 

The most notable similarity between the Ocelot 400 and Ocelot 400 Plus is their oscillating properties. Unlike traditional scrubber dryers that use rotational or cylindrical cleaning actions, the Ocelot machines feature an oscillating base. These bases moves side to side and forwards and backwards 3,000 times per minute, providing a deep clean with a very small oscillation size. This action mimics the manual scrubbing motion you would use to remove a stain from a table, ensuring thorough cleaning. 

To manually scrub the floor to the same standard, you would need to replicate this motion at the same frequency to achieve a similar level of cleaning. However, manual scrubbing typically involves much slower and less consistent movements. For example, a person might scrub at a rate of around 100-200 strokes per minute, which is significantly less than the 3,000 oscillations per minute of the machine. 

For textured flooring, people often use a microfiber mop with agitation strips to scrub the cleaning solution into the indentations. This helps lift dirt and grime from the textured surface. Although this may be effective, manual scrubbing takes considerably longer and applying the necessary level of pressure can be exhausting and potentially harmful to the user’s physical health.  

Due to the intensity of the oscillating machines, you only need to apply the machine once to an area to achieve perfect cleaning results. 

The Weighted Rectangular Base: 

Enhancing the performance of the oscillation further, the Ocelot machines feature a weighted base, which means the machine applies more consistent and effective pressure to the floor. This enhances the scrubbing action and ensures a deeper clean with less effort from the user. Another unique attribute is the rectangular shape. It’s almost guaranteed that the room you’re cleaning is square or rectangular, and with most machines, it can be impossible to reach the edges and corners of a floor. The Ocelot machines can reach every corner perfectly. 

 

Cleaning pads:

The Ocelot’s come with three different pads to cater to various cleaning needs:  

  • Contour Pad: Made from an astroturf-like material, this pad is perfect for tile and grout cleaning. It effectively gets into grout lines, removing dirt and foot marks.  

  

  • Melamine Pad: Essentially a large magic sponge, this pad is intertwined with other materials to enhance durability. It’s ideal for safety floors and hard floors with slight indentations, providing a gentle yet thorough clean.  

  

  • Microfiber Pad: This pad is designed for daily cleaning. It requires less water and is perfect for maintaining cleanliness without over-wetting the floor. 

 

Easy-to-remove tanks:  

The Ocelot machine comes with a removable tank, making it easy to empty and refill without long trips to fill up and fix to the machine, which would be awkward with the weight of the water. This feature saves time and effort, increasing overall efficiency. The clean water tank can be filled with any chemical or just water, thanks to the deep cleaning action. 

 

What are the key differences? 

 

Vacuumation of water:  

The most significant difference between the Ocelot machines is the vacuumation feature, which is exclusive to the Ocelot 400 Plus. This feature is designed to pick up water and deposit it into the recovery tank. This capability allows users to apply more water to the floor during cleaning.

The standard Ocelot 400 was initially designed as a low-moisture machine. Thanks to its oscillation performance, minimal water is needed to achieve excellent cleaning results. In fact, you don’t even need to use any cleaning chemicals—it’s that effective. However, with the Ocelot 400 Plus, you now have the option to use more water if desired & it provides an additional assurance that the floor will be kept completely dry after cleaning.

 

 

Recovery Tank for dirty water: 

As mentioned, when the water is vacuumed, it’s then deposited into the recovery tank. The large red box like feature provides the most visible difference to the machine. And you may find the movement of the machine differs sightly due to the weight.  

 

User functionality:  

Operating both oscillating machines is straightforward, as they are designed to be user-friendly, minimising the need for extensive training and accommodating users with diverse abilities. They feature a simple on/off switch, with the only difference being the additional vacuumation switch on the Ocelot 400 Plus. Users can also increase the amount of water that they choose to release, if they’re using the Ocelot 400 Plus.  

 

Battery life:  

Both Oscillating machines are powered by a lithium-ion battery, which can be charged overnight without the risk of overcharging. This intelligent battery extends the machine’s operational life, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Once your machine battery runs out, it’s easy to switch to a fully charged battery and you’re ready to go again.

The only difference when it comes to battery is the amount of power consumed. Using the vacuumation component will increase the amount of power used, even when the vacuum isn’t turned on, the weight of the recovery tank could also have an impact. But thanks to the machine’s ability to swap the battery, you can run the machine for as long as you’re required.

 

Conclusion:  

 

The Ocelot 400 and Ocelot 400 Plus both offer excellent cleaning capabilities due to their oscillation technology. Neither machine is inherently better or worse than the other; however, their functionalities differ slightly. The Ocelot 400 Plus, with its vacuumation feature, is particularly suited for flooring that requires floors to be left completely dry. This may be required in high traffic areas, where you’ll see significant footfall. Or with moving & handling operations.
