Solving cleanliness Issues in the Transport Sector

Solving cleanliness Issues in the Transport Sector | Ensuring cleanliness in the transport sector is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Health and Safety Compliance Keeping things clean isn’t just for appearance, it’s crucial for health and safety. When we keep our transport facilities clean, we’re ensuring the well-being of passengers and staff, making sure everyone stays healthy and safe. Regular cleaning helps to stop the spread of germs and viruses, cutting down on illness.Safety Challenges: Maintaining these standards can be challenging as you’ll also need to consider potential hazards, like hidden sharps (needles or broken glass). To ensure proper disposal employees need to wear appropriate PPE and to avoid direct contact, use tools such as grabbers and tongs and then following the appropriate disposal procedures. Another aspect to ensure safety is inspections of  high-risk areas such as construction zones or high-traffic areas to identify and mitigate any potential hazards. There should also be efficient documentation & reporting of incidents, this helps maintain cleaning and decency standards and ensures accountability and effective communication among the teams.
  2. and get regular training for disposal procedures.

  1. Public Perception and Satisfaction The cleanliness of public transport hubs and vehicles significantly impacts public perception. A clean environment enhances passenger comfort and satisfaction, which is vital for maintaining the reputation of service providers. Negative perceptions due to poor cleanliness can be detrimental to a transport operator’s image and customer trust.

  1. Operational Efficiency Clean and well-maintained facilities and vehicles contribute to operational efficiency. Regular cleaning reduces the need for costly repairs and extends the longevity of infrastructure and equipment. Additionally, clean, and organised spaces minimise disruptions, leading to smoother operations and fewer delays caused by dirt and clutter.

  1. Environmental Impact Using eco-friendly cleaning products and practices helps reduce the environmental footprint of transport operations. Proper waste management and sustainable cleaning methods are essential for minimising pollution and promoting a greener transport sector. Specifically challenges with th

In summary, cleanliness in the transport sector is not just about aesthetics; it plays a critical role in health and safety, public perception, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Ensuring high standards of cleanliness is fundamental to providing a safe, comfortable, and efficient travel experience for everyone.

Seating Upholstery | Aisle Cleaning | Footwell space

Now we recognise that maintaining cleanliness is paramount in the transport sector, let’s delve into solving cleanliness Issues in the Transport Sector

Regular/ Daily Cleaning

transport

Public transport vehicles, such as trains and buses, receive regular cleaning, including wiping down armrests and vacuuming seats.

Using an industrial-style vacuum, like the Victor Cordless Back Vacuum, is recommended for cleaning between seats and down aisles. A cordless solution enhances accessibility to tight spaces and allows for flexible movement. Additionally, a backpack vacuum offers excellent mobility and reduces strain on the user, improving overall efficiency.

One specific benefit of using the Victor Back Vacuum is its high-comfort harness. When used for prolonged periods, ensuring comfort is crucial not only for user satisfaction but also for their health and safety. Although the Victor Back Vacuum is designed to be super light at 7kg, the machine will eventually be filled, adding additional weight. Over time, this could cause discomfort, which is why the padded harness provides essential support.

To optimise performance further, it is important to have the right accessories for the vacuum. For detailed cleaning, you will need brushes and crevice tools to ensure thorough and effective cleaning.

Back vacuum

While vacuuming is great for removing loose dirt and debris, achieving a deeper clean requires the use of moisture. This can be challenging due to the obstructions posed by seats, tables, and the typically narrow aisles of trains and buses. Although a mop can be useful in such environments, a scrubber dryer offers a quicker and more effective cleaning solution.

At Victor we learnt that many manufacturers create large machines for large spaces but reaching those smaller confined areas is as important to achieve a completely clean environment. The Victor Hyperglideis our favourite solution for this, the same look and size as an upright vacuum, but in the form of a scrubber dryer.

Hyperglide for transport

For those hard-to-reach areas, the Victor Mini Scrubber can be used to clean underneath and around seating, in any tight space. Completely versatile, the Mini Scrubber features adjustable handles, handheld functionality, and interchangeable cleaning heads. There’s also an extendable long reach handle, this is great if you’re not able to get close to the area you’re cleaning. Or so users won’t have to bend down to clean low level areas.

(Example of the Mini Scrubber being used by a customer in the Transport sector)

Periodic Deep-Clean

When it comes to period cleaning of seating, we recommend using a steam cleaner, this will penetrate the fabric, effectively removing germs, stains, and bacteria. Another benefit of using a steam cleaner is that it does not involve any harsh chemicals which contributes to sustainability efforts.
Victor provides two variants of commercial steam cleaners, the SL8000 and the Steam Extractor.
The SL8000 combine HEPA vacuumation with steam to remove dirt and water, leaving surfaces clean, dry, and sanitised. Keeping your seats dry is important, especially if they can’t air dry naturally. Any leftover moisture could lead to mould, leaving the seats in a worse condition than prior to cleaning. The use of the HEPA filter helps to remove any dust, pollen, mould and bacteria particles from the air, which reduces the risk of viral infection.
For a slightly more powerful steamer, Victor supplies the Steam Extractor. Although this does not include vacuumation, it does have a slightly higher temperature of steam.

Transport Hubs | Train Stations & Bus Stations

Transport infrastructure in the UK often lacks essential maintenance and repairs. Public funding is limited, and like other sectors such as healthcare and highway maintenance, there isn’t always enough money to cover all needs. This can lead to various issues and deteriorating conditions. Even with £36 billion reallocated from HS2 into various transport projects, funding remains insufficient.

Aging infrastructure, poor drainage systems, and severe weather at train and bus stations can sometimes result in leaks. And limited funding can delay those essential repairs. And it’s getting to that time of year where we’ll unfortunately but definitely see rain.

For a short-term solution, Victor has produced the innovative SlipStop®. The SlipStop® range features a wide funnel leak collector that efficiently gathers water from leaks while also serving as a high-visibility wet floor sign, minimising slip hazards.

Given the pressures of ensuring health and safety, the SlipStop® is an excellent temporary fix. Using a bucket to catch leaks can be a tripping hazard, especially in high-traffic areas during peak times. A bucket might not be visible and could result in a passenger or employee sustaining an injury.

Watch the video below to learn more:

Flooring in High-Traffic Areas

Train stations and airports experience exceptionally high levels of foot traffic, especially during peak times when passengers are commuting to and from work or school. This means floors are exposed to a variety of contaminants, including food, drink spills, oil, and litter. Cleaners must ensure these high-traffic areas receive extra attention and remain free of significant obstructions. Maintaining slip resistance is also crucial to ensure passenger safety.
Littering, particularly with chewing gum, is an ongoing issue, costing the UK government £7 million per year to clean streets and public spaces. Besides being unsightly, chewing gum is also a nuisance to clean. We recommend using a steam cleaner combined with a flat-edged scraping attachment. The Victor SL8000 is an excellent solution, as it comes with a full range of attachments for scraping the floor. Additionally, the SL8000 includes HEPA vacuumation, ensuring the flooring is left completely dry. The steam from the machine helps to soften the gum, breaking down the adhesive properties, making it easier to lift from the floor surface.

For general cleaning, an industrial scrubber dryer is recommended for floor maintenance. Manual methods, such as mopping, are often ineffective, leaving water behind, restricting the user, and wasting time and energy. In high-traffic areas, it’s almost unavoidable to have people walking across the floor during cleaning and leaving the floor wet is a hazard to passengers but also can make the floor dirtier, because people will then tread the dirt from their shoes onto the wet floor.

Victor supplies a range of high-performance scrubber dryers that are uniquely compact. These machines are designed to cover as much floor space as larger models but in a smaller form factor, making them excellent for use in large spaces without creating obstructions, as well as in small spaces like corridors.

When choosing a scrubber dryer, it’s important to ensure it has sufficient vacuumation to collect the water left behind. The Victor range offers a unique benefit with the placement of the squeegee at the back of the machine, this helps remove water from the floor more effectively—a feature not commonly found in the market.

Another advantage is user functionality. Like much of the Victor range, these machines are designed to be used by anyone with basic training. In the cleaning industry, it’s common for companies to employ agency or inexperienced staff. The industry also employs a higher percentage of non-British workers (21%) compared to the average across all employment sectors (18%). This means English may not be the first language for some users. Therefore, it’s important that machines can be easily understood on their first use which also saves time & money.

Green Cleaning Practices

Sustainability has become a key objective for many organisations, including those in the transport sector. Increasingly, there is pressure to adopt sustainable practices due to the significant impact of customer demand. This can be a decisive factor in whether people choose one company’s products and services over another’s.
Sustainability in cleaning can be introduced with a variety of practices. Northern Rail has been working to reduce their single-use plastics by installing cleaning solution fill stations across their network, cutting down the number of bottles used by 9,000 annually. In 2023. In terms of their cleaning solution, they also introduced ‘Clean Zero’—a chemical-free cleaner created by re-engineering water through a seven-stage filtration process. This solution is now used across their fleet of 345 trains.
Stopping or reducing the use of chemicals in cleaning is becoming a popular method for implementing sustainable practices. And one of the reasons why Victor introduced the Oscillating machines to the product range. The Ocelot 400 and Ocelot 400 Plus, were created to enable cleaning with 0% chemical, providing an intense clean with water alone. The rectangular-shaped pad driver at the base of the machine offers 3000 rounds of 7mm cleaning action per minute. Another unique benefit of this machine is the ability to clean textured flooring. Specifically, safety flooring features indentations & grooves which can be notoriously difficult to clean. The Ocelot’s penetrate these grooves removing the embedded dirt and debris.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we hope that this article sheds light on some of the key issues for cleaning within the Transport sector and how they can be solved when you’re using the right cleaning products.

Guide: Rejuvenating Your Sports Hall This Summer

Sports halls are versatile, serving not just for P.E. but also as venues for assemblies, events, and more. They even open to the community post-school hours. Maintaining these spaces is key to keeping them functional and clean for student use.

If not properly maintained, sports halls can become health and safety risks. Accumulated grease, sweat, and dirt create slip hazards. Regular cleaning prevents accidents, making halls safe and welcoming.

Summer breaks offer the perfect chance for deep cleaning and maintenance. The tasks may range from full overhauls to simple upkeep. With a 6-week window, there’s ample time for thorough work, including broader school maintenance.

We’ve compiled a guide with tips for effective floorcare, ensuring you’re ready for the upcoming school year.

Guide: Rejuvenating Your Sports Hall This Summer | Step 1: Vacuuming

You should always start by removing any loose dirt and debris. Loose dirt can act as sandpaper, causing scratches and marks which damage the surface of the floor. To optimise the vacuuming process, you should think about using an industrial vacuum. Commercial vacuums have much more powerful suction and capacity, allowing you to vacuum in half the time compared to using a domestic vacuum.

Victors Commercial Vacuum Cleaners

UCS

Step 2: Floor Scrubbing

After vacuuming, the next step is to clean the floor with an industrial Scrubber Dryer. Much like a commercial vacuum, a Scrubber Dryer is capable of cleaning a significantly larger area in a shorter amount of time than a traditional mop can manage.

The advantage of using a Scrubber Dryer extends beyond efficiency. Also ensuring that minimal water is left on the floor’s surface. This feature is particularly crucial for timber sports hall floors, where excessive moisture is a concern. Mopping can introduce too much water into the wood, compromising the sealant and leading to potential swelling, shrinking, and subsequent warping or discoloration as the wood dries. By effectively removing water after scrubbing, Scrubber Dryers mitigate this risk, ensuring longevity and preserving the appearance of your flooring.

It’s still vital that whichever chemical you choose will efficiently sanitise. Bodily fluids such as sweat, contain high levels of protein and salt which builds up and forms a residue which cannot be penetrated by water alone.

When selecting cleaning agents for sports hall floors, including those made of polyurethane, vinyl, and timber, it’s essential to opt for a gentle, pH-neutral detergent mixed with water. Harsh chemicals like ammonia and vinegar should be avoided; despite their strong cleaning power, they are highly abrasive and can accelerate the wear and tear of the flooring. Your best option is to purchase a floor cleaning solution specifically made for your floor material. For absolute clarity, you could check with your floor manufacturer.

Timber Floors Only

Step 3: Sanding

When it comes to maintaining timber floors, the complexity increases significantly. For those looking to breathe new life into their sports hall, sanding and polishing are essential steps for a comprehensive rejuvenation. Sanding is a process whereby the wooden floor is completely stripped of any old lacquers and paint, taking the floor back to the original timber.

Given the expansive area of a sports hall, industrial-grade machinery is the most efficient choice for sanding. As we mentioned previously, this is much more complex, and you should consider hiring someone experienced or acquire some foundational level training. If you attempt to use a sander without any experience, you could end up damaging the floor. Once you’ve completed the sanding process, you should vacuum the area thoroughly to remove all traces of sawdust and debris. Finally, you should apply a sealant or varnish to protect the timber and enhance the appearance.

For all Sports Hall Floors

Step 4: Buffing and Polishing

Now you can move on to the final stage of refurbishing your sports hall floor, using a Rotary Machine. This is the most effective way to achieve a smooth and shiny finish.

A Rotary Machine paired with a buffing pad will smooth out any imperfections & provide further protection to the floor. There are a variety of different pads, which can provide a different finish so it’s important to explore different variants to see what would work best for you. For polishing floors you typically want to use a white pad, which is less abrasive and ideal for polishing without causing damage.

If you do choose to polish your floor using a Rotary Machine, it’s important to be aware that you’ll require basic training to operate the machine safely and effectively. Remember, while it’s possible to undertake this task yourself, hiring a professional can ensure the job is done efficiently and to a high standard, especially if you’re not confident in operating the machinery.

Consult your Rotary Machine manufacturer as they should be able to provide guidance and support. If you happen to choose a Victor machine, one of our experts can visit your location or alternatively you could visit our office for a full demonstration & training. Watch our training video

Now you’ve finished using your Rotary Machine, you should carefully inspect the hall and if you can see any marks or scuffs, use a microfiber cloth to gently rub the areas in a circular motion. Also, you may not have reached the edges of the hall using the Rotary Machine so you could consider polishing with a smaller hand-held buffer or edge machine.

Step 5: Applying Markings

While not always necessary, reapplying markings is crucial if the refurbishment process has led to their damage or removal. Begin by accurately plotting out the lines with a chalk line. This preliminary step allows for adjustments before any permanent markings are made, ensuring precision without the stress of irreversible errors. For enhanced accuracy, consider utilising specialised line marking machines and precision tools designed for this purpose. If the task seems daunting, given the variety of sports and corresponding markings required—such as for football, basketball, or badminton—hiring a professional line marking service is advisable. They bring expertise and efficiency, ensuring that your sports hall meets both regulatory standards and the demands of gameplay.

Rotary Machine and Wet/Dry Vacuum: The Perfect Duo

When it comes to deep cleaning floors, a Rotary Machine and Wet/Dry Vacuum are the perfect combination. Here’s why.

Rotary Machine and Wet/Dry Vacuum | Maintaining pristine floors is essential for creating a clean and inviting environment, but it often comes with its own set of challenges. The secret to achieving spotless floors lies in a professional approach to the tools we use.

Rotary Machine and Wet/Dry Vacuum showing application

Enter the dynamic duo: Rotary Machine and Wet/Dry Vacuum

In this blog post, we’re about to unveil why this combination is the perfect match. Combining scrubbing and suction, these powerhouses work in perfect harmony to deliver floors that gleam with cleanliness.

Section 1: The Power of a Rotary Machine:

A rotary machine is a staple in a professional cleaner’s cleaning cupboard. Although in recent years other machines have tried to replace the rotary machine, when used correctly, no other floorcare machine can clean a floor more efficiently or cheaper.

What Is a Rotary Floor Machine Used For?

A rotary floorcare machine is an incredibly versatile machine that can competently tackle an array of floor maintenance tasks. Its defining feature is a circular rotating driveboard that accommodates various types of pads or brushes, each suited for distinct purposes.

For information on choosing the correct pad for your rotary machine, check out our blog: ,Floor Pads 101: Choosing the Right Colour for Your Victor Scrubber Dryer or Rotary Cleaning Machine

This machine excels in roles such as scrubbing, stripping, and polishing floors, particularly those crafted from hard surfaces like tile, vinyl, concrete, and hardwood. The rotary motion of the machine isn’t merely about movement; it’s about agitation and engagement. By agitating the floor surface, the machine loosens dirt, grime, and even stubborn stains, making their removal significantly easier.

Do Floor Scrubbers Really Work?

Absolutely, floor scrubbers (not to be confused with Scrubber dryers) are highly effective in their role.

These devices employ brushes or pads to scrub and agitate the floor surface. The mechanical action, combined with water and suitable cleaning solutions, effectively dislodges dirt, stains, and grime.

Rotary floor scrubbers, particularly, offer consistent and efficient cleaning results, making them a popular choice in various settings. The ability to cover large areas and maintain a consistent level of pressure ensures a thorough and uniform clean across a variety of floor types.

What Is the difference between a floor scrubber and floor polisher?

Speed… or ‘RPM’ as we usually refer to it.

The RPM relates to how many turns or revolutions of the drive board in a minute. There more revolutions, the faster the drive board is spinning.

A rotary floor polisher rotates at a much high RPM than a rotary floor scrubber. A high speed rotary floor machine will add a nice shine to a floor when used dry and combined with a red or white floor pad. A slower speed Rotary floor machine is ideal for scrubbing and deep cleaning tasks when paired with lots of water and a darker colour pad (Such as Blue, Green or Black.) or a poly scrub brush

What Is the Best Hard Floor Scrubber?

Selecting the best hard floor scrubber relies on a range of factors. Considerations include your specific needs, floor type, desired finish, range or tasks in a facility, budget and the size of the area you intend to clean.

Seek out a hard floor scrubber that offers , multiple brush or pad options tailored to different floor types, and a water tank with sufficient capacity. Aim for a lower RMP for scrubbing tasks, ideally between 180 – 240 RPM as this will ensure a deep scrub.

Research reputable brands with positive feedback for durability and performance. Here at Victor we have been manufacturing Rotary Machines in Britain for over 75 years and pride ourselves in the quality of our Made in Britain, built to last cleaning machines.

Section 2: Understanding Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaners:

Due to the copious amounts of water put down in the floor scrubbing process, there needs to be a decent method for drying the floor.

Cue the Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner…

What Does a Wet and Dry Vacuum Do?

The prowess of a wet and dry vacuum lies in its ability to handle diverse cleaning tasks. Picture this: spilled drinks, water leaks, or damp messes—these are no match for a wet and dry vacuum.

But that’s not all.

It’s equally skilled at picking up dry debris like dust, crumbs, and pet hair. The genius lies in its dual nature, seamlessly transitioning between wet and dry modes by simply changing the filter.

Trying to pick liquids with a standard vacuum cleaner is likely to damage the motor.

Are Wet and Dry Vacuums Any Good?

Absolutely, wet and dry vacuums are more than just good; they’re exceptional.

These versatile machines bridge the gap between conventional vacuum cleaners and mopping, offering dual functionality that caters to both liquid mishaps and dry dirt.

Their robust suction power and rugged build make them indispensable in a wide range of scenarios, transforming cleaning challenges into manageable tasks.

What Are the Disadvantages of Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaners?

Though wet and dry vacuums offer a plethora of advantages, a few drawbacks are worth noting. Firstly, their larger size and weight can make them less convenient for daily indoor cleaning compared to traditional vacuum cleaners.

Wet and Dry vacuum cleaners tend to be more expensive than a single use vacuum cleaner. Additionally, some models might generate more noise due to their powerful motors and suction capabilities.

Section 3: The Synergy of the Combo: Rotary Machine and Wet/Dry Vacuum:

Having explored the individual strengths of the Rotary Machine and Wet/Dry Vacuum cleaner, it’s time to unveil the dynamic synergy that emerges when these two cleaning powerhouses join forces.

Efficient Pre-Cleaning:

Imagine this scenario: a floor that’s witnessed its fair share of foot traffic, with dust, dirt, and spills creating a challenging cleaning task.

Enter the wet and dry vacuum, the ultimate pre-cleaning partner.

This vacuum effortlessly hoovers up loose dirt, liquids, and debris, creating a clean canvas for the rotary floor machine. By eliminating the preliminary mess, the wet and dry vacuum sets the stage for the rotary machine to perform at its best.

Simultaneous Cleaning and Extraction

This is where the real magic unfolds. As the rotary floor machine gets to work, agitating and scrubbing the floor surface, the wet and dry vacuum follows closely behind, promptly hoovering up the dislodged dirt, cleaning solution, and moisture.

This tandem operation leaves no room for dirt to settle back onto the floor.

The result?

A meticulously cleaned surface that’s not only visually appealing but also free from any remnants of the cleaning process.

Time-Saving

The beauty of this combination lies in its efficiency. With both machines working in tandem, the cleaning process becomes significantly faster.

There’s no need for multiple passes or extra time spent on drying the floor. The wet and dry vacuum’s rapid extraction capabilities, coupled with the rotary machine’s thorough scrubbing action, ensure that each pass leaves the floor cleaner than ever before.

Safety

By using a powerful wet and dry vacuum cleaner to remove the water put down by the rotary machine, the floor is touch dry in minutes. Because the wet and dry vacuum dries the floor so quickly, the risk of slips are eliminated.

Deep Clean and Restoration

The synergy of the rotary machine and wet and dry vacuum isn’t just about surface cleanliness; it’s about restoration.

This combo delves deep, removing ingrained dirt, old coatings, and stubborn stains that might have seemed impossible to budge.

From revitalising worn-out floors to uncovering the original lustre of hardwood surfaces, this partnership offers a level of deep cleaning that’s hard to achieve with standalone methods.

Section 4: Rotary Machine and Wet/Dry Vacuum – Tips for Effective Use:

Having delved into the remarkable capabilities of the rotary floor machine and the wet and dry vacuum, let’s now explore some practical tips to ensure you’re making the most of this dynamic cleaning duo. These insights will help you achieve optimal results and maintain the longevity of your equipment, making your floor cleaning routine a breeze.

Choose the Right Cleaning Solutions

Different floor types require different cleaning solutions. Whether you’re dealing with tiles, hardwood, or vinyl, ensure you select cleaning agents that are compatible with the material. This not only ensures effective cleaning but also prevents damage to your floors.

Adjust Settings for the Task

If your rotary floor machine comes with adjustable settings (for example the Victor Multispeed) to cater to various cleaning tasks such as scrubbing, polishing, and stripping. Ensure you opt for a lower RPM when scrubbing to ensure optimal results and avoid possible damage to the machine and floor.

Regularly Empty and Clean the Vacuum

To maintain the efficiency of the wet and dry vacuum, make it a habit to empty and clean its collection chamber after each use. This prevents clogs, ensures maximum suction power, and prolongs the life of your vacuum. Check the floor tool for damage after each use, and ensure the squeegee is in perfect working condition.

Use the Right Pads or Brushes

The effectiveness of the rotary floor machine depends on the type of pads or brushes you use. Select the appropriate attachment based on the floor type and the task at hand. This ensures optimal cleaning without causing any damage.

Follow Proper Technique

Using both the rotary floor machine and the wet and dry vacuum requires proper technique. When using the rotary machine, move it in overlapping passes to ensure even cleaning. With the wet and dry vacuum, maintain a steady pace and avoid excessive force that could potentially damage the floor.

Regular Maintenance

Perform regular maintenance on both the rotary machine and the wet and dry vacuum. Clean and inspect the equipment, replace worn-out parts, and perform any recommended maintenance procedures to keep them in top working condition.

By following these tips, you’ll harness the full potential of the rotary floor machine and wet and dry vacuum combination, transforming your floor cleaning routine into a seamless and efficient process.
