Using the wrong brush

There are several misconceptions about brushes for Rotary machines, such as the belief that wire brushes are always the best choice for heavy-duty cleaning and material removal. However, it makes a big difference the type of floor you’re applying the brushes to.

In this blog we’re going to delve into two different brushes used with our Victor Rotary machines: the Polyscrub brush and the Shampoo brush. We’ll explore which brushes are suitable for various applications and the unique characteristics of each brush type.

Understanding the different brushes for your cleaning machine is essential to the performance of your machine. Using the wrong brush could result in the following:

  • Ineffective Cleaning: The brush may not be suitable for the surface you’re cleaning, resulting in poor cleaning performance.

  • Surface Damage: A brush that’s too coarse for a delicate surface can cause scratches or other damage.

  • Machine Wear and Tear: Using the wrong brush can put unnecessary strain on the machine, potentially leading to faster wear and tear or even damage to the machine itself.

  • Safety Hazards: Incorrect brush use can create safety hazards, such as slipping on inadequately cleaned floors or damaging the machine, which could lead to malfunctions, and therefore a risk to the user.

Now we understand the problems and risks if you’re using the incorrect brush for your flooring, let’s take a closer look at each brush variant.

Polyscrub Brushes

The Poly Scrub Brush is designed for scrubbing hard floors. It’s typically used on a standard speed machine and is particularly effective on uneven floor types such as pitted concrete or tile floors with grating. This brush excels in working into all the nooks and crannies, making it ideal for oily machine shop floors as it cuts through grease efficiently. Made of polypropylene fibre, it is the most course of the two brushes, providing robust cleaning power for tough surfaces.

The Polyscrub brush featured in this image is white, but it’s important to be aware that the colour is not always the same for each brush variant.

Shampoo Brushes

On the other hand, the Poly Shampoo Brush is a softer brush, also made of polypropylene. This brush is intended for carpet cleaning and is used on a standard speed machine with a solution tank filled with high-foaming shampoo. It offers one of the deepest cleans available for carpet cleaning methods, ensuring your carpets are thoroughly cleaned and refreshed.

Which Brush should you choose for your Rotary?

For Hard Floors: If you’re dealing with hard, uneven surfaces or oily floors, the Poly Scrub Brush is your go-to. Its coarse bristles are perfect for tackling tough grime and reaching into crevices.

Examples of hard floor:

  • Tile: Effective for cleaning grout lines and removing dirt.

  • Concrete: Ideal for scrubbing away tough stains and debris.

  • Vinyl: Gentle enough to clean without damaging the surface.

  • Stone: Suitable for maintaining natural stone floors.

For Carpets: If your focus is on carpet cleaning, the Poly Shampoo Brush is the better choice. Its softer bristles, combined with a high-foaming shampoo, provide a deep and effective clean.

How to fit a solution tank on a Rotary Machine | Understanding and installing solution tanks for the Victor Rotary Machine

How to fit a solution tank on a Rotary Machine | Understanding your cleaning machines is crucial for efficient cleaning as well as ensuring health & safety for the user and preventing issues with the machine.

Our Victor Rotary Machines are a cornerstone of our product line, and we prioritise providing comprehensive training for all users. However, maintenance tasks can sometimes be challenging. In this blog, we will walk you through a detailed, step-by-step guide to seamlessly install your solution tank.

We will specifically explore the various solution tanks available for Victor floorcare machines and provide clear instructions on how to fit them onto your machines.

How to fit a solution tank on a Rotary Machine | Choosing your solution tank

At Victor Floorcare, we offer two sizes of solution tanks to cater to different cleaning needs. (Tanks must be purchased separately to your machine) :

  • 7-litre tank: Ideal for smaller tasks.
  • 15-litre tank: Perfect for larger areas or more extensive cleaning tasks.
  • Both tanks are designed to fit onto the machines in the same way, ensuring ease of use and flexibility.

Fitting the solution tank

Here is step-by-step guide to fitting the solution tank onto your Victor floorcare machine:

  • Identify the Bracket Section: Locate the bracket section on the front of the handle. This is where the two nuts on the back of the tank will fit.

Mount_ How to fit a solution tank on a Rotary Machine

  • Attach the Tank: Place the tank onto the brackets and tighten the nuts to secure it in place.

  • Connect the Lever: The lever on the tank controls the amount of water applied to the floor. Ensure the feed tube is connected, directing the solution to the centre of the pad or brush.

water tube_ How to fit a solution tank on a Rotary Machine

Filling your tank

You can fill the tank in two ways:

  • Fill In Place: Leave the tank attached to the machine and fill it using a hose. If you choose to fill in place and you haven’t already mixed your cleaning chemical. Make sure you put your chemical in the tank after the water, if you do the reverse you’ll find your tank fills with bubbles, reducing the space for your water.

  • Detach and Fill: Remove the tank and fill it at a sink. You may find this easier as you are less likely to spill any water onto the floor, and it is easier to mix your cleaning chemical first before putting it into the tank.

Adjusting your tank chain

Different models of Victor machines have varying handlebar lengths. Therefore, it’s crucial to ensure the chain controlling the water release is correctly positioned:

  • Check the Split Ring: Ensure the split ring on top of the chain fits over the lever section.
  • Adjust if Necessary: If the chain is not in the correct position, adjust the split ring to a different link.

Chain              Attached chain

Final Steps

  • Reattach the Tank: Once the chain is correctly positioned, reattach the tank to the brackets.
  • Shut Off Valve: Ensure the shut-off valve at the bottom of the tank is in the correct position to prevent accidental water release.
  • Connect the Feed Line: Attach the feed line to the centre base of the machine.

Operating the Machine

Now you’re ready to go! When cleaning, lower the handle to the operating position and use the handle lever on the left side to control the water flow.

Guide: Rejuvenating Your Sports Hall This Summer

Sports halls are versatile, serving not just for P.E. but also as venues for assemblies, events, and more. They even open to the community post-school hours. Maintaining these spaces is key to keeping them functional and clean for student use.

If not properly maintained, sports halls can become health and safety risks. Accumulated grease, sweat, and dirt create slip hazards. Regular cleaning prevents accidents, making halls safe and welcoming.

Summer breaks offer the perfect chance for deep cleaning and maintenance. The tasks may range from full overhauls to simple upkeep. With a 6-week window, there’s ample time for thorough work, including broader school maintenance.

We’ve compiled a guide with tips for effective floorcare, ensuring you’re ready for the upcoming school year.

Guide: Rejuvenating Your Sports Hall This Summer | Step 1: Vacuuming

You should always start by removing any loose dirt and debris. Loose dirt can act as sandpaper, causing scratches and marks which damage the surface of the floor. To optimise the vacuuming process, you should think about using an industrial vacuum. Commercial vacuums have much more powerful suction and capacity, allowing you to vacuum in half the time compared to using a domestic vacuum.

Victors Commercial Vacuum Cleaners

UCS

Step 2: Floor Scrubbing

After vacuuming, the next step is to clean the floor with an industrial Scrubber Dryer. Much like a commercial vacuum, a Scrubber Dryer is capable of cleaning a significantly larger area in a shorter amount of time than a traditional mop can manage.

The advantage of using a Scrubber Dryer extends beyond efficiency. Also ensuring that minimal water is left on the floor’s surface. This feature is particularly crucial for timber sports hall floors, where excessive moisture is a concern. Mopping can introduce too much water into the wood, compromising the sealant and leading to potential swelling, shrinking, and subsequent warping or discoloration as the wood dries. By effectively removing water after scrubbing, Scrubber Dryers mitigate this risk, ensuring longevity and preserving the appearance of your flooring.

It’s still vital that whichever chemical you choose will efficiently sanitise. Bodily fluids such as sweat, contain high levels of protein and salt which builds up and forms a residue which cannot be penetrated by water alone.

When selecting cleaning agents for sports hall floors, including those made of polyurethane, vinyl, and timber, it’s essential to opt for a gentle, pH-neutral detergent mixed with water. Harsh chemicals like ammonia and vinegar should be avoided; despite their strong cleaning power, they are highly abrasive and can accelerate the wear and tear of the flooring. Your best option is to purchase a floor cleaning solution specifically made for your floor material. For absolute clarity, you could check with your floor manufacturer.

Timber Floors Only

Step 3: Sanding

When it comes to maintaining timber floors, the complexity increases significantly. For those looking to breathe new life into their sports hall, sanding and polishing are essential steps for a comprehensive rejuvenation. Sanding is a process whereby the wooden floor is completely stripped of any old lacquers and paint, taking the floor back to the original timber.

Given the expansive area of a sports hall, industrial-grade machinery is the most efficient choice for sanding. As we mentioned previously, this is much more complex, and you should consider hiring someone experienced or acquire some foundational level training. If you attempt to use a sander without any experience, you could end up damaging the floor. Once you’ve completed the sanding process, you should vacuum the area thoroughly to remove all traces of sawdust and debris. Finally, you should apply a sealant or varnish to protect the timber and enhance the appearance.

For all Sports Hall Floors

Step 4: Buffing and Polishing

Now you can move on to the final stage of refurbishing your sports hall floor, using a Rotary Machine. This is the most effective way to achieve a smooth and shiny finish.

A Rotary Machine paired with a buffing pad will smooth out any imperfections & provide further protection to the floor. There are a variety of different pads, which can provide a different finish so it’s important to explore different variants to see what would work best for you. For polishing floors you typically want to use a white pad, which is less abrasive and ideal for polishing without causing damage.

If you do choose to polish your floor using a Rotary Machine, it’s important to be aware that you’ll require basic training to operate the machine safely and effectively. Remember, while it’s possible to undertake this task yourself, hiring a professional can ensure the job is done efficiently and to a high standard, especially if you’re not confident in operating the machinery.

Consult your Rotary Machine manufacturer as they should be able to provide guidance and support. If you happen to choose a Victor machine, one of our experts can visit your location or alternatively you could visit our office for a full demonstration & training. Watch our training video

Now you’ve finished using your Rotary Machine, you should carefully inspect the hall and if you can see any marks or scuffs, use a microfiber cloth to gently rub the areas in a circular motion. Also, you may not have reached the edges of the hall using the Rotary Machine so you could consider polishing with a smaller hand-held buffer or edge machine.

Step 5: Applying Markings

While not always necessary, reapplying markings is crucial if the refurbishment process has led to their damage or removal. Begin by accurately plotting out the lines with a chalk line. This preliminary step allows for adjustments before any permanent markings are made, ensuring precision without the stress of irreversible errors. For enhanced accuracy, consider utilising specialised line marking machines and precision tools designed for this purpose. If the task seems daunting, given the variety of sports and corresponding markings required—such as for football, basketball, or badminton—hiring a professional line marking service is advisable. They bring expertise and efficiency, ensuring that your sports hall meets both regulatory standards and the demands of gameplay.

Unboxing Your New Victor Rotary Machine

Unboxing Your New Victor Rotary Machine | Congratulations on receiving your new Victor rotary machine. To ensure that it is unpacked safely and sustainably, please follow these steps:

1. The box should be delivered in an upright position, strapped to the pallet, in a tall box. If the box looks like it has been stored on it’s side or had anything stored onto of it, please check the contents before accepting delivery.

2. Using 2 people, lift the box from the pallet and onto the floor, but keep upright at this point. Depending on which machine you have ordered, the box could weigh up to 45kg. This is a 2 person lift, and moving this box should only be attempted by a minimum of 2 people.

3. Once the box is on the floor, tilt the box towards you until it is laid lengthways on the floor. There are arrows on the edge of the box to indicate which way up the box should be when opening. Do not open the box if the arrows are upside-down, this could damage the machine and will be very difficult to get out of the box.

4. Open the edge of the box. The Machine handle should be facing you and the right way up.

5. Pull the handle and wheel the machine out of the box fully using the machines transport wheels.

Choosing the Perfect Rotary Machine Speed for Your Floorcare Needs: A Guide

Choosing the Perfect Rotary Machine Speed for Your Floorcare Needs | When it comes to maintaining the cleanliness and shine of your floors, the thought of choosing the right speed of a rotary machine might initially seem like a daunting task. With a spectrum of speeds to consider, it’s easy to get lost in the technicalities.

However, we’re here to assure you that making this crucial decision is simpler than you might think. In this blog post, we’ll unravel the mystery behind rotary machine speeds and guide you through the process of selecting the perfect one to meet your cleaning needs.

Choosing the Perfect Rotary Machine

Picture the speed of rotary machines as a spectrum, with a low-speed zone at one end and a high-speed zone at the other. This spectrum represents how the different speeds of machines are more suitable a for different tasks.

Choosing the Perfect Rotary Machine Speed for Your Floorcare Needs | TLDR: Generally speaking:

Slower speeds are ideal for deep scrubbing tasks, particularly if you want to add weights for deep scrubbing. – Never use a scrubbing brush on higher speed machines as this could damage the floor, the machine or both.
Higher speeds are are ideal for polishing tasks. Use a white or red floor pad only on higher machines and use only for floor polishing.

Choosing the Perfect Rotary Machine | Low-Speed Rotary Machines (180 RPM)

At the lower end of the spectrum, we have machines like the Victor Trojan 17, operating at a modest 180 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute). These machines are the workhorses of specialist cleaning tasks. If you have delicate surfaces like stone that require careful restoration, these low-speed machines are your go-to option. They provide the precision and control needed for such tasks.

These machines are also perfect for heavy-duty scrubbing tasks in industrial settings. Whether it’s a warehouse with stubborn stains or a greasy workroom that needs a thorough cleaning, low-speed machines can handle the job effectively.

Standard Speed Rotary Machines (230 RPM)

Moving a bit further along the spectrum, we find standard-speed machines operating at around 230 RPM. These machines strike a balance between power and versatility. They are your reliable companions for periodic cleaning and routine scrubbing tasks.
What makes them even more versatile is their compatibility with various attachments. With the right tools, standard-speed machines can take on tasks like carpet cleaning, giving you a multifunctional cleaning solution.

High-Speed Rotary Machines (300 RPM)

Stepping up the speed ladder, we reach high-speed machines, clocking in at 300 RPM. These machines are all about spray cleaning and polishing tasks. If you’re looking for a machine to keep your floors consistently clean and shiny, high-speed is the way to go.
They are perfect for regular maintenance cleaning, and the best part is that they excel in spray cleaning. Just a fine mist of cleaning solution, and these machines will effortlessly restore the shine to your floors. Keeping your space clean and attractive has never been easier.

Burnishing Rotary Machines (1000 RPM+)

At the high end of the spectrum, we have the burnishing machines. These machines are like the superstars of the cleaning world when you need to build a high shine quickly. They are known for their ability to transform dull floors into glossy, reflective surfaces in no time.
But their utility doesn’t stop there. If you’ve applied floor seal or polish and need it to harden for high-traffic areas, burnishing machines are the go-to choice. They ensure that your floor seal or polish becomes durable, ready to withstand heavy use.

Multi Speed Rotary Machines (200 – 400 RPM)

If you find you need to scrub, deep clean and polish your floors on a regular basis, you might find a rotary machine with multiple speed settings idea for your needs. The Victor Multispeed features a variable speed motor, allowing the operative to switch between 200RPM and 400RPM, making it ideal for both cleaning (lower RPM) and polishing (Higher RPM), without the need to maintain multiple machines.

Understanding the spectrum of floor polishers and buffer speeds is the first step towards selecting the perfect rotary machine for your cleaning needs. Whether it’s precision for specialist jobs, versatility for standard cleaning, efficiency for daily maintenance, or the magic touch of high-speed burnishing, there’s a machine waiting to make your floors shine.

Ultimate School Deep Cleaning Guide: Transform Your School During Holidays

Ultimate School Deep Cleaning Guide | Deep cleaning a school over the holidays is crucial for maintaining a clean and healthy environment for students and staff. It helps eliminate germs, allergens, and other contaminants that may have accumulated throughout the year. This guide will provide you with a step-by-step approach to deep clean a school, focusing on particularly problematic areas. Additionally, we’ll cover how to deep clean different floor types commonly found in schools.

Ultimate School Deep Cleaning Guide: Transform Your School During Holidays

How is a School Deep Clean Different from a Normal Clean?

Deep cleaning a school goes beyond the regular cleaning routines and focuses on thorough cleaning and disinfection of various areas. Here are the key ways in which a school deep clean differs from a normal clean:

Intensity: A school deep clean involves a more intensive and meticulous approach compared to regular cleaning. It aims to eliminate accumulated dirt, germs, and contaminants that may have built up over time.

Comprehensive Coverage:

While regular cleaning typically focuses on surface-level cleaning, a deep clean addresses hard-to-reach areas, hidden corners, and high-touch surfaces that require extra attention. It covers areas often overlooked during routine cleaning, such as baseboards, vents, and light fixtures.

Cleaning Frequency:

Deep cleaning is performed less frequently than regular cleaning. It is typically conducted during school holidays or breaks when students and staff are not present, allowing for thorough cleaning without disruption.

Specialised Equipment and Techniques:

Deep cleaning may involve the use of specialised equipment, such as steam cleaners, floor scrubbers, and carpet extractors, to achieve a more thorough and effective clean. Additionally, specific techniques may be employed to tackle stubborn stains, grease, or other challenging issues that normal cleaning may not address adequately.

Focus on High-Touch Areas:

Deep cleaning places particular emphasis on high-touch surfaces and frequently used areas, such as door handles, handrails, light switches, and classroom supplies. These surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to minimise the spread of germs and ensure a healthy environment.

Floor Care:

Deep cleaning includes more extensive floor care, such as carpet extraction, stripping and waxing of hard floors, or using specialised cleaning solutions and machines to remove stubborn stains or build-up.

Ultimate School Deep Cleaning Guide: Transform Your School During Holidays

Disinfection Protocols:

Deep cleaning involves a heightened focus on disinfection. Surfaces are not only cleaned but also disinfected using appropriate disinfectants to kill bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms. Disinfection protocols adhere to industry standards and guidelines for effective sanitisation.

Problematic Areas:

Deep cleaning specifically targets problematic areas in a school, such as restrooms, cafeterias, gyms, Science laboratories, and high-traffic zones. These areas require more thorough cleaning due to the potential for increased dirt, germs, and odors.

By implementing a school deep clean, educational institutions can provide a safe, clean, and healthy environment for students and staff. It ensures that all areas, including those commonly overlooked during regular cleaning, receive the necessary attention to maintain optimal hygiene and well-being.

What are the Benefits of Deep Cleaning a School?

Deep cleaning a school offers numerous benefits that contribute to creating a healthier and more conducive learning environment. Here are the key advantages of implementing regular deep cleaning practices in schools:

Improved Hygiene:

Deep cleaning helps maintain high standards of hygiene by removing dirt, dust, allergens, and germs that can accumulate over time. Thorough cleaning and disinfection of surfaces, equipment, and high-touch areas reduce the risk of infections and the spread of contagious illnesses among students and staff.

Enhanced Indoor Air Quality:

Deep cleaning involves proper dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning of vents, filters, an carpets. This helps to improve indoor air quality by reducing the presence of allergens, pollutants, and particulate matter. Clean air contributes to a healthier environment and can minimise respiratory issues and allergies among students and staff.

Prevention of Illnesses:

Schools can be breeding grounds for germs and bacteria. Deep cleaning, especially the use of effective disinfectants, helps eliminate pathogens and reduces the likelihood of illnesses spreading within the school community. This can lead to a decrease in absenteeism and an overall healthier student and staff population.

Increased Safety:

Deep cleaning addresses potential safety hazards in various areas of the school. By properly cleaning and maintaining floors, stairs, and other surfaces, the risk of slips, trips, and falls can be reduced. Regular cleaning and inspection of equipment, such as playground structures, ensure that they are safe for use.

Positive Learning Environment:

A clean and well-maintained school environment promotes a positive atmosphere for learning. Students are more likely to feel comfortable, motivated, and focused in a tidy and organised setting. Additionally, a visually appealing school environment can enhance students’ pride in their school and encourage responsible behavior.

Prolonged Lifespan of Assets:

Deep cleaning and proper maintenance of school facilities, including floors, furniture, and equipment, can extend their lifespan. Regular cleaning and appropriate care help prevent the accumulation of dirt, stains, and damage, thereby reducing the need for costly repairs or replacements in the long run.

Professional Image:

A clean and well-maintained school creates a positive impression on visitors, including parents, prospective students, and staff. It reflects the school’s commitment to providing a safe and healthy learning environment and can enhance its reputation within the community.

Compliance with Regulations:

Deep cleaning in schools ensures compliance with health and safety regulations, as well as any specific guidelines set by education authorities. By following recommended cleaning practices and protocols, schools can demonstrate their commitment to maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene.

Staff Morale:

A clean and organised work environment can boost staff morale and productivity. Deep cleaning not only provides a healthier space for teachers and staff but also creates a positive atmosphere that contributes to their overall well-being and job satisfaction.

How often does a school need to be deep cleaned?

The frequency of deep cleaning in a school depends on several factors, including the size of the facility, the number of students and staff, and the specific needs of the school.

Generally, it is recommended that schools undergo a deep clean at least once a year during school holidays or breaks when students and staff are not present. This allows for a thorough cleaning and disinfection of all areas, ensuring a fresh and healthy start to the new academic year.

However, high-traffic areas such as hallways, stairwells, and common areas may require more frequent deep cleaning, such as once every term, to address the accumulation of dirt and maintain cleanliness. Additionally, areas with specific requirements, such as restrooms, cafeterias, and science laboratories, may need to be deep cleaned more frequently, with schedules ranging from daily to monthly, depending on usage and hygiene standards.

Regular assessment of the school’s cleanliness, consultation with cleaning professionals, and adherence to local regulations can help determine the optimal frequency of deep cleaning for each area within the school.

What Equipment Do I Need to Deep Clean a School?

Deep cleaning a school requires the use of specific materials and equipment to ensure a thorough and effective cleaning process. By having the right tools at hand, you can address different surfaces and areas within the school environment. Here are some essential materials you will need for a successful school deep clean:

Cleaning Solutions:

Choose cleaning solutions that are appropriate for different surfaces, such as disinfectants, all-purpose cleaners, glass cleaners, and floor cleaners. Ensure you have a variety of solutions to address specific cleaning needs throughout the school.

Microfiber Cloths:tion

Microfiber cloths are highly effective for dusting, wiping, and polishing surfaces. They trap and remove dust, dirt, and allergens without leaving behind lint or streaks.

Mops and Buckets:

Select mop heads and buckets suitable for the type of floors you will be cleaning. Consider having both wet and dry mops to address different cleaning requirements. A bucket with a wringer will help efficiently remove excess water from the mop.

Vacuum Cleaner:

A reliable vacuum cleaner is essential for thorough cleaning of carpets, rugs, and hard-to-reach areas. Ensure your vacuum cleaner has appropriate attachments and filters for different surfaces. A wet and dry vacuum cleaner is useful for addressing spills and wet messes.

Broom and Dustpan:

Rubber Gloves:

Protect your hands from chemicals and potential contaminants by wearing rubber gloves during the cleaning process. This helps ensure your safety and maintain hygiene standards.

Safety Goggles:

For tasks that involve potential splashes or sprays of cleaning solutions, wearing safety goggles is recommended to protect your eyes from any potential hazards.

Disinfectant Wipes:

Disinfectant wipes are convenient for quickly sanitizing small surfaces, high-touch areas, and equipment. Have a supply of wipes that are effective against a broad range of pathogens.

Ladder or Step Stool:

Depending on the height of certain areas, such as reaching high shelves or cleaning windows, a sturdy ladder or step stool may be necessary for safe and thorough cleaning. Ensure the ladder or step stool is stable and suitable for the intended task.

Rubbish Bags:

Keep an ample supply of rubbish bags for collecting and disposing of waste generated during the deep cleaning process. Separate bags for different types of waste, such as general waste and recyclables, can help with proper waste management.
